Keeping a journal/blog is like yoga.  It takes a lot of discipline and focus.  By nature, I’m not a writer but I appreciate how “writing” stuff  down is helping me to retain a lot of the new info. We learned that yoga means relationship.  Just as I am getting to know myself more through this training, this blog is another aspect of a relationship with myself.  >_<

The other night, I went to a professional talk on data visualization and it really inspired me to think about visualization projects I can tinker with.   Notable projects include Nicholas Felton’s data viz’ed annual reports which depict all aspects of his life from the relationships he’s made to the food that he’s ingested.  I mean, isn’t this a great way towards becoming more mindful and aware of your life? What if I tracked how many downward dogs I’ve done during the year?  Or how many times I’ve meditated?  Not really as a goal but just to keep stats.   Another project I loved was Laura Kurgan’s Million Dollar Blocks.  Saw this a few years ago when it was up and was blown away then.  The project has progressed and the numbers she shared that night regarding how much was spent on putting folks in prison was staggering.  During the Q&A session, someone asked about the speakers’ design process and Laura said that she sees it as the relationship between 2 data sets.  Hmmm.   Aren’t we just made up of data?  In class, we’re learning about the main relationships in each asana so maybe I can visualize that in some way.  🙂

“Each time you make a decision to do or not to do something, that becomes data.”

Happy New Year!

The Chinese and Indians have a legend that “the world is supported by four elephants standing on a giant turtle.” It’s a lucky animal whose magic united heaven and earth. Here’s hoping everyone has a healthy and prosperous new year!

I’m looking forward to the new year. Just as we enter 2011, I’ll be doing the OM Yoga Teacher Training express track. Excited and scared. But can’t think of anything better to begin the year with than to challenge myself with this learning experience. I received the good news that I was accepted just as I was starting my 2 week winter break from work. Woot! I have a lot of reading to do already. But with my shiny new Kindle, reading multiple books at once will be a breeze (and saves trees!) 🙂  The sad news is that one of the teachers I thought I’d be training with has left OM.  She’s one of my all-time favorites whose classes are always packed (shows her popularity) and filled with fun, creative sequencing.  I’m going to miss her even though I have not been able to attend her classes has much in recent years.  I will always be grateful to her for pulling me up into my first inversion and for pushing me in my practice.  Wishing her lots of love and light.

Things I Found to be True in 2010

  • It’s all about timing – From people getting married and friends moving away to start new lives…my belief that everything happens for a reason (and when they need to) has been reinforced.
  • It pays to speak up – the drama with my ear resulted in my going to a specialist who helped me by vacuuming out a humongous wad of wax from my ear.  My original doctor still billed me but thanks to V who pushed me to speak up, I overcame my aversion to confrontations and asked the doctor to waive the fee back on Dec. 6. Reason?  Simply that she did not help me and made the matter worse.

I’m not a good blogger

It’s been nearly 5 months since my last post. That’s not surprising since I am admittedly a bad blogger. I’m busy. I’m lazy. I forget to do it.

Here is a brief recap of what’s been happening since June:

  • Got a new job at one of America’s happiest companies
  • Traveled to Paris and Edinburgh on my first assignment

  • Traveled to Montreal for the first time
  • Traveled to Seattle to see friends and hike Mt. Rainier
  • Got into hiking
  • photos TBD

It’s been a good year and we’re almost done with 2010. Wow. I just submitted my application for the OM teacher training program in Jan/Feb 2011. If I’m accepted, I want to document my classes and experiences here since we will need to keep a journal anyways. Hope I get in and that I can keep up the blog. 🙂

Drops of Water

Do not take lightly small good deeds,
Believing they can hardly help;
For drops of water one by one
In time can fill a giant pot.

It’s been a while since I updated my site.  But I have no excuse now because it’s incredibly easy to do nowadays with wordpress templates!
